Youth Music lab

We have revived the local Youth Music Club which was first set up by Will and Maker Music & Arts CIC in the early 2000s, and which inspired and encouraged Josh and Tom to pursue music through to a professional level. The weekly gathering always had consistent attendance over the years and paved the way for many young people to improve their musicianship, confidence to perform and technical awareness, whilst giving them a safe social space to enjoy and develop interpersonal skills and friendships.

Funded by Youth Music, our Youth Music Lab features four professional mentors, and attracts a steady stream of regular participants that progress in ability and confidence every week. We strive to provide free learning opportunities in band development, songwriting, recording and production, and access to an open stage to perform to live audiences whenever they feel ready. Performing in front of your friends and family is a nervewracking experience, and one that often puts young people off progressing any further. We’re fortunate to be in a position to be able to provide a nurturing and supportive environment for this to take place.

Our youth work at large has received support from Youth Music, National Lottery Community Fund, Mendennick Solar Fund, the Waitrose Community Matters scheme, and the Cooperative Community Fund. Our close relations and collaborations with Livewire Youth Music project in Saltash, Street Factory CIC and Plymouth Music Collective, expand opportunities for our community across the water and beyond.

our educational goals

  • Encourage young people to create, learn, develop and perform music.

  • Provide a safe social space to develop social skills and lasting friendships.

  • Intergenerational strength; collaboration between young people and their parents, teachers and peers.

  • Teach music in a relatable context that appeals to individual tastes and sentiments.

  • Encourage young people to start their own music-based projects.

  • Access to professional music and production equipment, and training in how to use it properly.

  • Fusion with a rolling troupe of local guest musicians and artists, many of whom are nationally acclaimed performers, songwriters, composers, producers and multi-instrumentalists.

  • Encourage interpersonal skills; sharing, working collaboratively as a team.

  • Actively promote and encourage gender equality within the music industry.
